Abstrakt Composer Bohuslav Martinů had a clear conception of his work Theater Beyond the Gate, which to a great degree was a stylistic response to the most modern avant-garde tendencies in music and theater, while also being firmly anchored in the cultural heritage of Europe, specifically France and his native Bohemia. These roots give rise to a synthesis and staging which draws from the heritage of harlequin pantomime and the work of Deburau, traditional scenes of commedia dell’arte as treated by Molière, and the folk customs and celebrations of Polička remembered from his youth. With respect to the music, it bears all the hallmarks of the compositional mastery which Martinů displayed in the ’30s as a composer. In this work, I examine the creation and challenges of this opera, and also discuss the new staging and production of Theater Beyond the Gate under my direction.
