Abstrakt (Fulltext in Czech available on the CZ version of our website) The study documents the London career of the Czech dancer, ballet master and choreographer Augustin Berger, who was approached in 1911 by the Alham¬bra Theatre management to stage the newly prepared grand spec¬tacular ballet Carmen. This study examines the history of previous productions of Carmen in London, the context of the production, the involvement of A. Berger and that of the dancers La Malaguenita, Maria la Bella and Anna Gaszews¬ka. The study has been successful in documenting both the manner of Berger’s work and the critical response to the new ballet. The production was also interesting because the theatre management decided to engage Spanish dancers for this ballet, whom they brought from their homeland.
